Ben D'Aguilar is a big man......he barely fits in the picture frame as he burns past. Don't make the mistake of thinking big means slow though. The big man moves quick like a cat....a big cat....who can squash you, or throw you, or trample you as he comes charging up the field. Defensive linemen are berzerkers set loose to unleash hell on the field.....and they are looking for you Mr. Quarterback.
Sport Sandbags is proud (and relieved) to be on the good side of the rookie Defensive Lineman who was the 13th overall pick of the Calgary Stamps in 2013. The former McMaster Marauder was the winner of the J.P Metras award for Most Outstanding Lineman in 2012 and holds the CIS single season sack record (12.5 in 8-games). He participated in the 2013 NFL scouting super combine and received invitations / attended
several NFL rookie training camps (Tampa Bay, NY Jets, NY Giants).
We could not be happier to be associated with Ben and his awesome collection of Tiger and Lion shirts. "It reflects my character" he says nonchalantly but with enough subtle menace to let you know he is not kidding. We wanted to meet Ben and give him some sandbags to play with so he wouldn't think of beating us up instead. We also asked him a few questions while we were at it.
SS: How does sandbag training complement the demands of the linebacker position?
BD: Linebackers have to move all different directions and we are constantly using our hands. The bags help replicate the feeling of grabbing and manipulating in a game situation
SS: What size of bag is most useful for you personally?
BD: I like the lighter weight bags. I have always trained a little "out of the box" and do a lot of higher rep functional exercises. I want to stay healthy and be able to train for the rest of life!
We were happy to get a training session in with Ben at Glenmore and see firsthand his approach to training.....and his karate kicks. Throughout the session we went through a number of position specific drills and some general strengthening exercises.
